Career Counseling

What career counseling services does the UCC offer?

The University Counseling Center offers career workshops (Career Decisions Workshops) and individual career counseling. The Career Decisions workshop is the first place for most students to learn more about themselves and how to make choices about majors and careers. Individual career counseling can be beneficial for students who want to discuss their specific career concerns in more detail or who for scheduling reasons can’t make the group workshop.

What happens in a Career Decisions Workshop?

The two-session Career Decisions Workshop helps students to understand the process of choosing a career direction or major and making good career decisions. Prior to the first session, students complete the Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and questionnaires to assess their vocational situation and past vocational experiences. After these materials are completed students attend two workshop sessions, each approximately two hours long. The first session will help you define your work style and occupations consistent with your personality. The second will address your specific interests, possible career choices, and individualized action plans for further career development.

What can I expect in an individual career counseling session?

Individual career counseling can vary based on the needs of each student. Individual sessions can be structured similar to the Career Decisions workshops, with the same material covered in each session, or they can address whatever the student needs assistance with regarding their career or major decisions. Individual career counseling is also short-term. Some of the reasons students seek individual career counseling include:

  • Questions about your future
  • Difficulty choosing between different majors to pursue
  • Conflict with family over your career choices
  • No career choice particularly stands out
  • Perceived barriers to pursuing career interests

Some students don’t know where to start. That’s okay – we can talk about that as well.

How are the career services at the University Counseling Center different than the Career Center or other career center resources on campus?

The career services at the University Counseling Center are geared towards helping students better understand themselves, their unique talents, skills, interests and personality, and to use that understanding to make decisions about careers to pursue. The Career Center has all the tools and resources to help you put your decisions into action, such as developing your resume, finding and applying for jobs, prepping for interviews, etc. Check out the Career Center’s website for more information about the services they provide.

Some other programs and schools each have their own Career Centers with information and resources tailored specifically to those student populations, including the School of Business and the Law School. Click on the links below to be directed to an individual graduate school’s career center:

What resources are there on the Web to help with my career decisions?

There are many sites on the internet which can help you to make the decisions about colleges and graduate schools, explore your major and career options, and find job postings which match your interests and abilities.

What are the charges for UCC career services?

The charge for the Career Decisions Workshops is $40. The fee is due at the time of testing, which covers the costs of tests and materials as well as the interpretation and feedback.

Individual career counseling costs $50 for each session after the initial free consultation. If testing is recommended, there is a separate fee for each interest, aptitude, or personality test recommended.  Session fees may be adjusted on the basis of financial need.
