Students who wish to continue in a language started in secondary school must take a language placement test.  Students will be assigned to a course at the level indicated by the examination score.  No credit may be earned for a course taken below the level to which students are assigned on the basis of the placement examination.

Students who wish to continue a Romance language must take a placement test even if they score 690 or above.

Departments that have a two-year foreign language requirement for majors are: American Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Classical Humanities, Early Modern European Studies, English, Judaic Studies, Liberal Arts (requires more than two years of a foreign language), and Music.

Latin does not fulfill the "modern" foreign language requirement for ESIA students.

Waiver Examinations

Certain introductory courses may be waived through departmental examinations that are offered periodically by some departments.  (Note that there is a $100 fee for departmental waiver examinations.  Check with appropriate department.)

The History Department offers a special waiver examination that is offered near the beginning of the semester.  Check with the History Department for further information.
