Understanding Course Numbers and Letters

Each course in the Schedule of Classes is identified by a series of letters and numbers.

DEPT (department code): The name of the department is shown as a two- to four-letter abbreviation.  Check the Key to Abbreviations for the name of the department.

CRN (Course Reference Number): Each course and most laboratory and discussion sections have a unique five-digit CRN that identifies the department, course, and section you are selecting when registering.

CRSE/SEC (course and section number): The second item is a three-digit number followed by a two-digit number or letters.  The first three digits identify the course, and the two digits or letters identify the section, that is, which one of many classes of a given course is represented.  Courses taught at the Mount Vernon campus are identified by an "M" followed by a number or letter.  Courses that satisfy the Writing in the Disciplines (WID) requirement have a "W" to the left of the section number.  The section number can also be used to indicate which sections of laboratory or discussion sections are available for a particular course.
