CI for Parents

For parents, CI offers an opportunity to interact with skilled faculty and staff members who are committed to excellence on campus.

Not only will parents get the opportunity to attend workshops during CI, they will also enjoy  social activities with other parents, and mingling with administrators and current parents from the GW Parents’ Association. CI will provide parents with an introduction to what life is like at GW and what to expect for their student’s college experience. To foster this important transition, students and parents will experience CI very differently. Parents who attend CI will note that parents and students will be on separate schedules for most of the program.

We encourage parents to participate in CI and experience life at GW as a member of the GW community. A registration fee of $100 per parent to help defray program costs and allows parents to attend all of our information sessions, breakout sessions, various social activities, entertainment, and group meals while attending CI. Registration for the Parents’ program can be completed during student registration for CI.

Parents and siblings attending CI should plan to stay at a local hotel, while students attending CI will stay with other students in their GW residence hall. There are two host hotels for CI: The George Washington University Inn and One Washington Circle. Both hotels are located just two blocks from the center of campus.

Office of Parent Services

As registered CI attendees, parents will also have an opportunity to meet staff from the Office of Parent Services. The Office of Parent Services is committed to establishing open lines of communication among parents, their students, and the University by publishing an online newsletter, The Connection, throughout the academic year. In addition, the Office of Parent Services hosts events for parents and families throughout the year, including Colonials Weekend, which is a weekend of celebration including events for families and the general GW community. Colonials Weekend 2010 will take place mid October 2010, so be sure to mark your calendar.

GW Parents’ Association

All parents have the benefit of automatic membership in the GW Parents’ Association, established in 1993 and facilitated by the Office of Parent Services. As a member, you can take an active role in your student’s college experience while networking with other GW parents, staff, and administrators. Rodney L. Johnson, the Director of Parent Services, is your personal contact with the University. Please visit the office online at http://gwired.gwu.edu/parents or call 202.994.2305 or 202.994.0139 for more information.
