English as a Foreign Language Placement

If English is not your first language you must submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), regardless of citizenship, country of residence or language of instruction in school. The minimum required score is 80 on the Internet-based TOEFL, 213 on the computer-based TOEFL or 550 on the paper-based TOEFL. Strong applicants to GW score much higher than the minimum required score on the TOEFL.In lieu of the TOEFL, applicants may submit results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS is required. The TOEFL requirement is waived only for applicants who score 550 or higher on the Critical Reading section of the SAT.

Undergraduate students with a TOEFL score below 550 (or 213, or 80) must register for EAP 015: American Multicultural Perspectives in Washington DC.  See the chart below for score descriptions by TOEFL test type:

TOEFL Test Format

Students must register for

EAP 015 if their score was…

Paper-based Test

 550 or below

Computer-based Test

 213 or below

Internet-based Test (iBt)

Regardless of TOEFL score, international students who are unfamiliar with the conventions of American academic writing are also encouraged to register for EAP 15 in order to build up their skills before taking UW20.

Upon the successful completion of EAP 015, students will go on to take University Writing 20, and two Writing in the Disciplines (WID) courses to fulfill GW’s literacy requirement.
