Because Interfolio allows you direct access to your credentials file, you can build an online portfolio that will allow you greater control over your job and graduate school application processes. If you ask supervisors or professors for recommendation letters, they can log on to Interfolio and upload letters directly into your file simply, securely and confidentially. If you need to forward your credentials, you can go online anytime and select which information you want to send, and Interfolio will deliver them through the mail or electronically via the Internet, whichever method you specify.

Features of Interfolio:

24 hour availability.

How can the Career Center help with credentials?

The Career Center will be happy to assist you if you have questions or concerns about the service provided by Interfolio. We can also offer you general advice on the process of building a strong set of credentials.

What if my letter writers don't want to submit their recommendations electronically?

Although your references can register (at no charge) with Interfolio and send their letters via the Internet, they aren't obligated to do so. Letters may be submitted to Interfolio by mail.

What if my references have other concerns about Interfolio?

The Career Center has informed GW academic departments about the Interfolio service. If your references have any questions, we'll be glad to advise them.

What will the service cost?

Interfolio charges an up-front fee to establish your account.  One-year or five-year options are available.  Mailings are charged individually as you request them.

How do I know my file is secure?

The security and reliability of your electronic credentials file is Interfolio's highest priority. They maintain a three-tier backup system to ensure that your file is around for as long as you want it to be.  This multi-tiered approach to security is vastly superior to maintaining a single paper copy of a document that could easily be damaged or lost in an accident.

What if I want a letter to waive my right to see a letter?

With every letter that you send, you will be able to decide whether that letter will be confidential or non-confidential.  In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, once you waive access to your letter (by marking it "confidential) you are prohibited from seeing it unless given express permission by the writer. The decision on confidentiality is entirely up to you.  Most institutions prefer (and some require) confidential letters of recommendation, as they believe that confidentiality results in a more honest account of the person.  If you do choose "confidential," you will still be able to send your letters out as usual.  You simply may not look at their contents. Please note that Interfolio screens mailing requests to ensure that users are not mailing confidential documents to themselves.  If we discover that you are attempting to do so, we will pause your mailings indefinitely until the issue is resolved.  This may substantially delay your deliveries.
