On-Campus Recruiting Program Information for Students

The On-Campus Recruiting Program (OCR) conveniently brings employers to campus to interview students for full-time and internship positions. Employers from small, medium, and large Fortune 500 organizations participate in on-campus recruiting, representing many types of industries.

On-campus interviews are conducted during the fall semester (September-November) and again during the spring semester (February-April). Employers pre-screen resumes, select the students they wish to interview using GWork, our online recruitment system.

To participate in the OCR program, please follow the instructions below:
  Register for a GWork account at www.gwork.gwu.edu.
 Once logged into GWork, click the link for the Online On-Campus Recruiting Orientation under the announcement section of the GWork homepage.  (The orientation is also listed below)
 View the orientation and complete the quiz (this takes less than 10 minutes).
 After successfully completing the quiz, within one business day you will be given access to all positions that are being interviewed for on campus.

Instructions for applying and signing up for interviews

 


Getting Started:

  • Log in to GWork.
  • Click on "Campus Interviews I Qualify For".
  • In the list that appears, select which you position you'd like to apply for by clicking on the job title link.
  • Carefully read the specific information about this job that appears on the next page, scrolling all the way to the bottom of the screen. If you meet all job requirements, select a resume, cover letter or other document that meets the requirements. Then click "Submit."
  • Your application document(s) will be sent to the employer. You will be notified through email when the employer makes a decision on your application. The Applications section will also show the status of the employer's decision.

To submit your resume for consideration:

  • Log into your GWork account.
  • Click on "Campus Interviews I Qualify For".
     - Click on job title.
  • In the shaded box on the right-hand side of the screen, select which resume you want to submit by clicking on the pull-down arrow.
  • Click submit.
  • On the next screen, in the shaded box, you will see confirmation that your resume has been submitted.

To sign up for an Interview:

  • Log into your GWork account.
  • From the home page click "Pending Campus Interviews" in the Quicklinks. This will give you the status of all the interviews to which you applied.
  • Review the status column to identify to which interviews you have been invited.
  • To sign up for an interview slot, click the "Schedule Interview" button next to the appropriate job.
  • The next screen will show the times that are available. Select a time by clicking the button. Then click "Submit".

Note: You will not be able to select a time slot until the sign-up start date listed in the box at the bottom of the job description.

To review the interviews you've signed up for:

  • Log into your GWork account.
  • From the home page click "Scheduled Campus Interviews" in the Quicklinks.
  • This will give you a summary of your interviews.

To cancel or reschedule an interview :

  • Log into your GWork account.
  • From the home page click on "Scheduled Campus Interviews" under Quicklinks.
  • Click on the date of interview (under Interview Date column).
  • If you're canceling the interview, simply click "Cancel Interview".
  • If you're rescheduling the interview, click "Reschedule", choose a different time then click "Submit".


Cancellation Policy
To cancel an interview, you must notify the Career Center's employer relations staff at least 48 hours prior to the time of your interview.

Canceling within this timeframe gives us time to schedule your fellow students, so please be courteous. 


Not signing up for an interview or canceling an interview counts as a cancellation.


You will be allowed two legitimate cancellations.  If you cancel more than two you will be ineligible to participate in the OCR program.

Canceling on the day of an interview
If an emergency arises the day of your interview  you must contact the employer relations staff by phone at the location of your interview informing them of your situation.

Failure to speak with somebody will result in your removal from the OCR program. 

Failure to show for a scheduled interview
If you fail to keep a scheduled interview appointment with an employer, you will be blocked from the OCR component of GWork. In order to regain your status in the program, you will be required to speak with a member of the employer relations staff and send a letter of apology to the employer.

If this happens more than once, you will be dismissed from the OCR program permanently.

Qualifications

Employers restrict applicants using three criteria.  The employer determines the degree level (bachelors, masters, etc), the graduation date, and the work authorization for which they wish to hire.  If you do not meet the employer’s screening criteria, the GWork system will block you from applying for the job.


Interview Preparation
The staff at the Career Center can assist you to improve and expand your interview skills.  You can meet with one of our career consultants during
drop-in hours, or participate in a mock interview.  You can also find various resources and sample interview questions on the Center's website. 

Day of your interview

  • Professional Dress:You are expected to dress professionally for your interview. A business suit is recommended.
  • Timely Arrival: Arrive 10-15 minutes before your interview time. Sign in on the interview schedule on the wall. Copy down the name, title, and address of the interviewer from the schedule for follow-up correspondence.
  • Smokers: It is recommended that you not smoke prior to your interview, not even in the car. Nonsmokers are particularly sensitive to the smell of smoke on a person's clothing, etc. and it could detract from your interview.
  • Greeters: Some organizations may bring a "greeter". Often the greeter is a GW alumnus(a) who will sit with you and offer a personal perspective prior to your interview.
  • Thank-You Notes: Send a thank-you note to your interviewer no later than 48 hours after your interview. Sample thank-you letters can be found in various places online and through the Career Center.

Information Sessions
Employer information sessions are an invaluable way to learn more about an
organization and prepare for your interview.  A list of employers hosting information session can be found in GWork
or on the Career Center Calendar.

Interview Locations
Interviews are located in the Old Main Building, Suite 207 or Duques Hall, Suite 560.  Make sure you have the correct location of your interview.  Your interview location can be found in GWork and in the interview confirmation email that is sent to you.

Interview Prep Workshop
Attend this workshop to familiarize yourself with the type of initial interview you might face, and possible follow-up interview scenarios.  Consult the Career Center's Calendar of Events for the dates and times this workshop will be held this semester.
