Fall Career Fair Tuition Scholarship Winner!
September 30, 2009
Congratulations to Danielle Tenney, winner of a $500 scholarship towards tuition at GW! All students who checked in at the Fall Career Fair on September 23, and who would be returning to GW for the Spring 2010 semester were eligible.
The Career Center had created this scholarship in lieu of the traditional gift for employers at the Fair.
Dear GW Students,
Despite the current state of the economy and its impact on the job market, the Career Center strongly encourages you to continue to actively prepare for your future career.
Why? Because employers will continue to hire—albeit on a smaller scale—and you will need to be ready to take advantage of the opportunities that do exist or that are created.
The job market will rebound eventually, but there will be changes. To fit in with newly-merged companies, creative new jobs and/or different work styles it is imperative that you become focused and knowledgeable. This will mean continuing to build on your specific field-related skills (e.g., accounting, research, technical) as well as overall functional skills (e.g., communication, analytical, team-based) that can be demonstrated to an employer.
How does this economic situation exactly affect the college employment market?
The college employment market for current students and pending graduates continues to look promising but has certainly become more competitive. Historically, employers during recessionary-like times continue to hire to maintain their business positioning. The scope and scale of these hires may change but successful companies and agencies must look for creative new staff to support their enterprises. Increasingly employers hire new staff from among their intern pool so it is important for you to participate in internships, Cooperative Education positions, part-time jobs and relevant volunteer opportunities.
What about employer interest in GW specifically?
Interest in hiring GW students for part-time, while-in-school jobs and post-graduation opportunities has remained steady and in some cases has increased. At September’s career fair, over 140 organizations attended, the largest amount to date. The number of internship and other employment listings on GWork continues to rise, and the on-campus recruiting program is robust.
The good news is that our location in the Washington, DC region provides expanded opportunities that may be more limited in other parts of the country. Specifically, sectors including the federal government, the large non profit community, research and policy agencies, technology and the service industry are areas of continued growth. In addition with a new White House administration on the horizon, a large number of job opportunities will be available.
So what can you do to successfully move forward?
