We provide alumni with comprehensive career services. Do you need to look for a job, figure out your next career, preposition for retirement, polish your resume, or sharpen your interview skills? We've got the help you need:
The Career Center's exclusive online job and internship posting service which features thousands of employment opportunities targeting GW students and alumni posted by over 15,000 organizations. To set up a GWork profile go to http://gwork.gwu.edu. The system requires a GW email address - if you do not have one, please see the GW Alumni Email Services web page at http://alumni.gwu.edu/benefits/email/index.html for details on how to set up GWMail or email forwarding.
Use this convenient service to have your resume and cover letter critiqued by an experienced career consultant. You may submit your resume and/or cover letter by stopping by the Career Resource Room with a copy of it, or by filling out the online request form. For more info, click on the title link above.
Note: There is no charge for a resume critique for alumni the first year following graduation. A fee of $20.00 per resume critique will be charged past one year.
An online employment research tool with a database of information on more than four million employers from major occupational sectors. You can search by industry type, location, and keywords.

This exclusive online career library enables you to access industry guides, career field information, occupational and employer profiles, plus surveys, diversity profiles and message boards. The Career Center has partnered with this document storage and mailing service to provide a convenient way to collect and store letters of recommendation, transcripts, resumes, and other relevant documents for applications to graduate/professional schools and for teaching positions. Each year, the Career Center sponsors three career fairs (including one exclusively for nonprofits), a summer job and internship fair, and a Federal Work Study job fair. The fairs feature employers who may be recruiting for full-time, part-time, cooperative education and/or internship opportunities--consult the profiles of registered employers on GWork to see if they are hiring and for which type of positions. Alumni will need to provide proof of their status (alumni card, resume, transcripts, etc) to enter any of our fairs.
Resources to assist you in the career exploration process are available in the Career Resource Room (CRR). Staff members are available to assist GW students and alumni by providing information about Center resources and services, career strategies and the job-search process.

We offer you two types of one-on-one assistance in navigating your career:
• Career Consultants are Career Center staff members who can assist you with job-search related issues.
• Career Coaches can assist you with comprehensive career issues. Coaches are selected based on their demonstrated coaching competencies, recommendations of colleagues and former clients, knowledge of University majors/degrees, and personal interviews.

Appointments with career consultants take place in the Career Center and can be made by calling 202.994.6495. For new alumni within one year following graduation there is no charge for consulting; for all other alumni the fee is $60 per hour. Information on our consultants may be found below.
Appointments with career coaches take place either over the phone or at the coach's place of business, and can be made by contacting the coach directly (information provided below). The cost is offered at a special rate for GW alumni of $150 per hour (regardless of graduation date).
Marva Gumbs Jennings
B.A., Psychology, Rutgers University
M.A., Education and Human Development, George Washington University
Marva has worked in the career services field for over thirty years, beginning in vocational rehabilitation and mental health, and culminating in higher education where she has worked since joining the GW Career Center in 1984. During her tenure at the Center, she has worked her way up within the organization, eventually becoming the director of career services, and in August of 2000 was tapped to be the executive director.
Brian V. Rowe
B.A. History, State University of New York College at Cortland
M.Ed., Higher Education Administration and College Student Personnel, Kent State University
Brian joined the Career Center staff as assistant director in June 2000, and has worked in the fields of career development and experiential education for over thirteen years. He routinely consults with students and recent graduates to assist in developing career paths and networking strategies. Brian works extensively with individuals who are interested in global careers and wish to gain work experience abroad.
Anne Scammon

Anne is currently the director of career learning and experience at the GW Career Center. With more than twenty years of experience working with college students, recent college grads and those re-careering, she brings her strong analytic skills and strategic job search and career development knowledge to her practice. She is a native Washingtonian and avid Redskins fan.
Buthaina Shukri, NCC
B.A., English and Spanish, Union College

M.S., Applied Psychology, Counseling, University of Baltimore
Buthaina is currently the director of the employer partnerships team at the GW Career Center. Previously, she worked at the University of Baltimore’s Career Center for nine years, as an assistant director and eventually as director. She is a Nationally Certified Counselor and has been providing career consulting services for over seventeen years--six of them through her own private practice.
Toy Tavarez
B.A., Social Science, Fordham University
M.S. Ed., Counseling, Fordham University Graduate School of Education
Toy brings to her work in the Career Center more than twelve years of higher education experience working with adult student populations. Previously, she was at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Business where she provided academic advising for MBA students balancing academics with corporate careers. She joined the George Washington University Career Center team as a career consultant in 2007.
James F. O’Brien
B.S., Business Administration, Merrimack College
M.A., Industrial Relations, Wayne State University
As principal of J.F. O’Brien and Associates, Jim has more than thirty-five years of experience as a human resource executive and consultant with some of America’s best known corporations. He specializes in career and leadership coaching and career transition and outplacement coaching and is certified by Georgetown University in Leadership Coaching and Organization Development. He is a member of the International Coaching Federation and the Society of Human Resource Management.
