Internships
Students engage in internships during fall, spring and summer semesters. During the school year, students often intern in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. During the summer, some students remain in DC, while others search for opportunities in other cities.
The Career Center acts as a clearinghouse for internship positions. Opportunities are available online through GWork, the Center's job and internship listing service exclusively for GW students and alumni.
What is an Internship? Internships serve as a means for students to gain practical, professional experience and to augment their academic knowledge. Internships can be found in most organizations; they are a way to gain practical experience. Students learn by actually taking part in an organization and observing how things are run.
Why Should I Intern? The benefits of internships are numerous. They provide students a means to experiment with a number of fields, to gain experience in a chosen field, to evaluate potential employers, to explore career options, to enhance individual networks, to build resumes and to develop skills. Visit the Center to discuss with a consultant how an internship may fit in to your career plans.
Are There Paid Internships? Internships may or may not pay depending on the employer and what is required of the student for the position. Most internships offer a stipend or academic credit.
What Is the Difference Between an Internship and a Co-op Job? There are similarities, however a co-op position is always paid, is substantive and lasts a minimum of one semester for graduate students and two semesters for undergraduates.
Can I Get Credit for an Internship? The employer, in conjunction with the student and their academic department, determines the possibility of getting credit for an internship. The particulars of each experience are unique.
