SPHHS Faculty

The School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and practice. They are a community of professionals whose experiences include athletic training, cancer research, community service, global climate health advising, and epidemiology. This provides students a rich breadth of knowledge to draw upon whether they are beginning their first introductory level course or are completing their senior year thesis.

Selected notable SPHHS faculty include:

Constance Battle, MD

Adjunct Professor in the Department of Prevention and Community Health at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. Dr. Battle does a lot of her work with children with disabilities, developmental delays, or chronic illnesses. Dr. Battle was named a Washingtonian of the Year by Washingtonian magazine and earned the President's Medal for Distinguished Community Service of The Catholic University of America. At GW, she won the Alumni Volunteer Award in 1994 and the Undergraduate Public Health Excellence in Teaching Award in 2005.

Jerome Danoff

Professor Danoff is an Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise Science. Professor Danoff has been involved in research related to body movement, rehabilitation and evaluation of function throughout his professional career, authoring or co-authoring dozens of papers focused on movement analysis, modalities used in the presence of cancer, motor performance, evaluation instruments for HIV-infected children, stroke rehabilitation and more.

Edward De Fabo

Professor De Fabo is a Research Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health.  Professor De Fabo lectures about the impact of ultraviolet radiation on skin cancer induction and immune suppression, and on global climate change and stratospheric ozone depletion. As chair of two key advisory committees -- the International Arctic Science Committee and the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment -- Professor De Fabo has led efforts to understand the impact of ozone depletion on human health and the biosphere. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including GW's Elaine H. Snyder Cancer Research Award on three separate occasions. In 1997, he was honored by the United Nations Environment Program for his outstanding contributions to protecting the ozone layer.

Todd Miller

Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise Science. Professor Miller's research centers on the physiological adaptation of skeletal muscle in response to exercise and disuse. His particular focus is on changes in muscle physiology after exposure to simulated and actual microgravity. Professor Miller is a member of the American Physiological Society, the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1990.

Ivan Kenyon Guillory

Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise Science. A former collegiate athlete and assistant coach, his longstanding interest in the interaction of exercise training and nutrition motivated him to pursue academic training in the fields of exercise physiology, kinesiology and nutrition.  Professor Guillory’s work in research focuses on the effects of antioxidants on muscular work, and preventive health in communities of color.

Wayne Miller

Professor in the Department of Exercise Science. Professor Miller teaches Exercise Physiology within the Department of Exercise Science.  His research includes studying metabolism as it relates to exercise and eating behavior, as well as attitudinal and lifestyle influences on activity. In addition to teaching, Professor Miller is treasurer for the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity and a fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and the North American Society for the Study of Obesity.

JoEllen Vrazel

Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise Science. Professor Vrazel coached NCAA Division 1 women's volleyball, a natural evolution from her long athletic career as collegiate, national, and international volleyball player. Once she decided to go in the direction of teaching, Profess Vrazel did her dissertation on the middle aged exercise experience for women. At GW, in addition to teaching, Professor Vrazel is the Director of the Sports Activity Programs.

Beverly Westerman

Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise Science. Professor Westerman has been at GW for over two decades in many different capacities. Most recently she has taken on the role of professor; however, she also continues to be the Head Athletic Trainer in the Athletic Training department.
