SMPA Faculty

The School of Media and Public Affairs (SMPA) faculty are committed to excellence in teaching and practice. They are a community of professionals whose experiences include investigative reporting, international journalism, political campaign experience, and correspondent and television personalities. This provides students a rich breadth of knowledge to draw upon whether they are beginning their first introductory level course or are completing their senior year thesis.

Selected notable SMPA faculty include:

Steven Roberts

J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs. Professor Roberts specializes in Journalism, Political Communication as well as Media, Society and Politics. Steve Roberts has been a journalist for more than 35 years, covering some of the major events of his time, from the antiwar movement and student revolts of the 60s and 70s to President Reagan's historic trip to Moscow in 1988 and nine presidential election campaigns. He has written for the New York Times for more than 25 years throughout his career.

Robert Entman

J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs. Dr. Entman has published dozens of journal articles, reports, and book chapters in fields such as political communication, public opinion, race relations, and public policy. In 2006, Dr. Entman was awarded the APSA Political Communication Division’s Murray Edelman Distinguished Career Achievement Award.

Lee Huebner

Director of The School of Media and Public Affairs. Prior to joining SMPA as Director, Lee Huebner was a professor of Communication Studies and Journalism both in the schools of Communication and Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Director Huebler also served as the CEO and Publisher of the International Herald Tribune, the first global newspaper. He also worked as a special assistant to the President of the United States and Deputy Director of the White House Writing and Research Staff during the Nixon administration.

Stephen Hess

Distinguished Research Professor of Media and Public Affairs. Professor Hess specializes in elections, media, political campaigns, political parties, politics, presidency, White House organization and staffing, and foreign media coverage of the United States. Professor Hess has been a member of the faculty of the School of Media and Public Affairs since 2004. Prior to this he had been at the Brookings Institute as a senior fellow in the governance studies program since 1972. He has served on the White House staffs of Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon, and has been an advisor to Presidents Ford and Carter. During the 2000 presidential election campaign, he wrote The Hess Report for USA Today, a weekly column on media coverage.
