Sports and Recreation

Varsity, club, and intramural sports are a tradition at GW with more than 4,000 students participating each year. Competing in the NCAA Division I of the Atlantic 10 Conference, GW's 22 men's and women's varsity teams have established a reputation of considerable success over the years. Popular club sports include ice-hockey, sailing, horseback riding, ultimate Frisbee, karate, racquetball, and rugby. In total there are 24 different club sport options.  In addition, students may choose to participate in 13 different intramural sports leagues each semester.

The hallmark of our athletic life is the Theodore and Annette Lerner Family Health and Wellness Center which is one of the largest health complexes of its kind affiliated with a private university. Students keep fit and active as well as enjoy six floors of indoor athletic amenities including spacious locker rooms, steam and sauna rooms, three-lane lap pool, equipment room, free weight room, 100 station cardio-exercise area, multipurpose aerobic gym, warm-up & cool-down areas, six international squash courts, four racquetball courts, three-lane jogging track, and four basketball courts.

The Mount Vernon campus features outdoor playing fields, an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and the Lloyd Gymnasium. Rock Creek Park, the National Mall, and the Potomac River also provide outdoor running trails, playing fields, and water sport options.
