Freshman Requirements

We prefer that you apply online. The GW Online Application allows you to submit your application in two parts. The first part is basic biographical information which can be easily submitted early in the application process. By submitting the first part of the application early, you have more time to devote to the essays contained in part 2 of the application. In lieu of the GW Online Application, you may also apply using the Common Application, either online or paper, provided a GW Supplement is submitted.

The following credentials are required for consideration. Link here for a printable Application Requirements Checklist for early decision applicants or regular decision applicants. When you submit your application, you will be sent via email a GWID number in order to check the status of your application and supporting credentials. It is each applicant’s responsibility to make sure that their application becomes complete by the stated deadlines.

  • Official high school/secondary school transcript mailed to us from your high school. Your transcript must show grades from ninth through the eleventh grade, as well as courses being taken in the senior year.
  • A Mid-Year Report should be sent by the high school as soon as grades become available.
  • A Counselor Recommendation and one Teacher Recommendation.
  • Essays. The essay questions are available in the Application.
  • SAT or ACT test scores sent directly to our Admissions Office by the testing agency. GW's school code for the SAT is 5246 and for the ACT is 0664.
  • An Early Decision Agreement form if applying as an Early Decision candidate.
  • A GW Supplement if applying using the Common Application.
  • If you are applying to the University Honors Program, Seven Year B.A./M.D., Six Year B.A./J.D., or a combined B.A./M.A. Program, or to one of our special programs, you must submit the online Honors, Accelerated, and Special Programs Application. Refer to the requirements chart  for additional credentials that may be needed.
  • An interview is not required for admission; however, as an applicant, if you elect to participate in an interview, it will be used in the Admissions process. We offer a variety of interview options which can be found through the GW Admissions Activity Center.
