Admissions Advice

  • Get to know us. Visiting the University, participating in an online chat, and meeting with a GW representative at your high school or a college fair can help you gain important knowledge of GW and also convey your interest in the University.
  • Send everything together. Submitting all your supporting documents including your high school transcript and recommendations in one package diminishes the possibility that documents will get misplaced or separated during processing.
  • Check the status of application. It is your responsibility to confirm that your application is complete. Through the GW Admissions Activity Center, every applicant can confirm that all required documents have been received and processed by the Admissions Office.
  • Review your email account frequently. Upon receipt of your application you will receive an email confirmation. You will also receive a second email containing your unique GW identification number and instructions outlining how to check your admission status online. If these emails are not received, please contact the Office of Admissions as soon as possible. In addition, periodic updates may be sent via email.
  • Make sure your supporting documents can be scanned. All application materials at GW are scanned into a computer system, and applications are read through an online system. Therefore, please do not staple documents together, and only submit documents that are able to be scanned (supplemental materials such as slides, CDs, and DVDs can not be scanned and subsequently will not be considered).
  • Meet financial aid deadlines.
  • Apply early. You are encouraged to apply as early as possible so that you have sufficient time to complete your application file and to confirm receipt of all supporting documents. 
  • Put your name and date of birth on each page of your supporting documents. This information facilitates the accurate placement of your supporting documents in your admissions file.
  • Check that your name is the same on all documents that you submit. Oftentimes, students spell their names in different ways or use more than one name, which makes it difficult to identify their records. In order to serve you better and to avoid any confusion, we ask that you please be sure that the name you use appears consistently on all of your application materials.
  • Documents in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  • Proofread before submitting your application and supporting documents. While many common spelling errors can be picked up through spell check, only thorough proofreading will eliminate grammar mistakes and misused words.
  • Choose an essay subject that gives us insight into you and your personality. There are no right answers when choosing an essay topic; however, the essay is an opportunity for the Admissions Committee to learn more about you. Choose a topic which conveys an important aspect of you, your character, or your personality which is not apparent anywhere else in your application.
