January 2008 Newsletter

FROM THE DEAN…..

As we enter the 27th year of the Admissions Alumni and Parent Program, I’m excited to introduce you to the first edition of AAP Connections—an online newsletter connecting AAP members and the Office of Admissions. We hope this newsletter will serve to provide you regular updates on the current state of admissions as well as updates on pertinent information about the University. Should you have suggestions for future editions or wish to contribute to AAP Connections, please let us know. In the meantime, I want to share with you information about the entering class of 2007.

This fall, we welcomed approximately 2,150 freshmen and 350 new transfer students to the University from just over 22,000 applications. Fall 2007 brought with it several University records with regards to the freshman class—the admit rate was decreased to 36%—a record low while the academic quality of the class increased—the average SAT for enrolling students is 1930 (1290 when using the traditional two-score average) and 66% of the class ranked in the top ten-percent of their graduating class. To appreciate these numbers even more, you only have to look back ten years to see how much more competitive GW has become. In 1997, we received a record-breaking 12,500 applications of which 49% were admitted. That year the average SAT for the enrolling class was 1235 with 55% of the freshmen having come from the top ten-percent of their high school class. If you would like more information about the entering class, please visit the AAP website.

Having been in admissions at GW since 1973, I have had the pleasure to work with a wonderful group of alumni and parents who are dedicated to helping us meet our goals by communicating with prospective students about our University. As we now look forward, I am honored to continue to have you be a part of our efforts to recruit and enroll talented and engaged students who will be successful GW students and dedicated alumni.
