Interview Tips
· Review the list of sample questions before the interview.
· Remember, it is the student’s interview, not that of his or her family. So the actual interview should only include you and the student.
· Timing – allow 20-25 minutes of interview time and then turn it over to the student to ask questions.
· If you receive a short answer from the student, ask them to expand a little more on their answer.
· Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know.” You are not expected to know everything. You can ask the student to write down their question and a staff member will follow-up with them or give the student the GW Admissions Representative’s business card and encourage them to call or email.
· Some students like to write their interviewer a note of thanks, if you’re comfortable providing the student your contact information, please feel free to do so.
· We ask that you wear attire which is appropriate to the activity. Professional dress leaves the student and family with a better impression of both GW and you as the interviewer. Please note that your interviewee may be dressed either professionally or casually – this should not influence your write-up about the student.
· Encourage the student to visit GW in person or via our web site at www.gwu.edu.
· Arrive early enough to familiarize yourself with the interview area and to be there before the student.
Be creative and enjoy the conversation!
