Interviews
Freshmen admission to GW in recent years has become increasingly more competitive and an optional interview is one component that may set a student apart during the evaluation process. Of the 20,000 applicants last year, approximately 15% of the pool participated in an interview during the months of September through December. While interviews at GW are not required for admission, we recommend this opportunity as it allows us to know more about the student, especially those qualities that might not come through in the written application. The goals of the interview are:
- For the student to leave the interview with a positive feeling about him/herself, about GW, and about the Office of Admissions.
- For the student to leave the interview knowing more about GW than when he/she came for the interview.
- For the Office of Admissions to have informations which provides additional insight in determining whether the student will succeed at our University by making the most of a GW education.
In some cases, this is the only opportunity a student has to meet with a representative from GW. By serving as ambassadors of the University, you play an essential role in this process and are able to create a vital link between the student and the University. It is important to make a personal connection with every student and one way in which this occurs is by providing them with a firsthand account of your experiences.
Though evaluative, our interviews are designed to be more of a casual conversation rather than a professional interview. Remember each student will react differently to your questions; this is why we have found that asking open-ended questions allows the student to expand on his or her answers. Your individual interviewing style, along with the student’s answers, will generate the conversation for a solid interview. Found in the link below are some sample questions to consider for your interviews.
