Calling Tips
-
A nice way to begin the call could be: Hi. My name is ________________ and I am an alumna/alumnus of GW (OR a parent of a current GW student) who lives in your area. On behalf of the University, I wanted to congratulate you on your admission to GW and welcome you to the community. I also wanted to take this opportunity to see if you had any questions that I could answer or, if I am unable to answer your questions, direct you to the appropriate person at the University.
-
Share anecdotes about your positive experiences at GW. Students respond better to stories, not just facts and figures.
-
Don’t talk negatively about other institutions or be overbearing.
- Don’t be afraid to say, "I don’t know." You are not expected to know everything. If there are any questions that you cannot answer, please refer them to the appropriate admissions staff member for their area (Admissions Contact List).
- If financial aid questions arise, please direct them to the Office of Student Financial Assistance at 202-994-6620.
- Encourage students to visit the web site for admitted students.
- Encourage students, whenever possible, to attend an April Visit Day for admitted students. Students may register through the GW Activity Center. This is the same site that students have been using to check the status of their applications.
- It is best to leave a message if someone other than the student or parents answers or if no one answers. Please leave your contact information for them to reach you if the student or their family members would like to follow up.
- Remember that this an exciting time for students and their families, though it is also a difficult time as students sort through all of their options. Feel free to end the call by congratulating them again. They deserve to feel very proud of their accomplishments as this was GW’s most competitive year in admissions!
